Hungarian (Magyar) is the working language in Szőny and Komárom. English and German are understood in some hotels and restaurants in central Komárom, but around the Brigetio ruins and on local buses a few well-chosen Hungarian phrases go a long way. Pronunciation is fairly phonetic and stress usually falls on the first syllable.
Because Szőny is a small residential district of Komárom, most interactions involve buying bus tickets, ordering food in family-run csárdas, or asking directions to the Lapidarium—situations where simple phrases save time and are actively appreciated.
Start with 'Jó napot!' (Good day) at the Lapidarium, ticket desks and small shops. Use 'Jó reggelt' before noon and 'Jó estét' after sunset. 'Viszlát!' or 'Viszontlátásra!' works for goodbye. A firm handshake with eye contact is standard when meeting someone formally.

Say 'Kérem az étlapot' (Menu, please) and 'Melyik a házi specialitás?' (What's the house specialty?). For local dishes such as halászlé or gulyás, ask 'Csípős?' (Spicy?). When ready, 'Számlát kérek' means 'I'd like the bill'; round up or add ~10% for tip.

Bus and local taxi are the main links between Komárom station and Szőny. Say 'A busz megálló hol van?' (Where is the bus stop?) and 'Mennyibe kerül?' (How much is it?). Keep small forint notes (Ft) handy—taxis in the district often have limited change.

Always pair requests with 'kérem' (please), end with 'köszönöm' (thank you), and say 'elnézést' (excuse me) to get attention. Use 'Uram' (Sir) or 'Asszonyom' (Madam) when addressing staff you don't know. Never clink beer glasses with wine—it's considered bad luck.

EU-wide emergency line: 112. 'Segítség!' = Help. For specific services say 'Rendőrség' (police), 'Mentő' (ambulance), 'Tűzoltóság' (fire). Look for the green cross and the word 'Gyógyszertár' for pharmacies; outside hours ask for the 'ügyeletes gyógyszertár' (duty chemist).
