French is the working language in La Salvetat-sur-Agout and in the surrounding Monts du Somail. English is rare outside the busiest summer weeks; most shopkeepers, gîte hosts, and bus drivers speak only French, and tourist office staffing can be seasonal. A few polite phrases turn a hesitant encounter into a warm one, especially in family-run auberges and market stalls.
The area is historically Occitan-speaking, and while Languedocien has no official status, a phrase like Adieu-siás or the salutation Cossí vas? (How are you?) is recognised and appreciated by older villagers. Use French as your default and treat Occitan as a friendly bonus rather than a necessity.
