Best timing to save
Visit July–early September for the cheapest pousada rates and driest walking weather. June São João is the cultural highlight but adds a holiday-weekend premium and typically requires booking pensões weeks ahead.

São João do Rio do Peixe sits deep in the sertão of Paraíba, far from the coast's resorts and the price tags that come with them. The town has minimal tourist infrastructure—expect a slow siesta-paced afternoon, simple pousadas locais, and a small commercial center where the feira is the daily anchor. That minimalism is the budget advantage: lodging, prato feito plates, and mototáxi hops all cost a fraction of João Pessoa or coastal Paraíba tabs.
The dry June–September window is when travel is most pleasant and beds are cheapest, but São João festivities in late June spike lodging rates and fill pensões weeks in advance. Outside the festival, travelers can negotiate pousada rates, eat full sertão meals for the price of a coastal snack, and use the intermunicipal bus and shared vans to reach neighboring sertão towns without a rental car.

Prioritize pensões familiares and pousadas locais near the Praça central—they run cheaper than anything listed online and put you within walking distance of the feira and the church. Avoid São João premium rates by staying slightly outside the festival corridor or shifting to July.

Eat the prato feito at lunchtime (carne de sol + macaxeira + feijão) where locals eat, snack on feira finds like goiabada and queijo, and skip dinner—most kitchens close around 20h. Avoid praça stalls during the festival week, where prices can mark up several times over normal.

Reach the town by intermunicipal bus from João Pessoa, Sousa, or Cajazeiras rather than renting a car. Inside town, use mototáxis for short hops and reserve vans (van de transporte) for day trips to nearby sertão villages—both are cheap and negotiable when arranged directly.

Common leaks: unmarked mototáxi fares, last-minute holiday-week lodging, bottled water bought at the praça, and tourist-priced festival food. Carry small BRL notes, agree on mototáxi fares before riding, refill water at your pensão, and eat at unmarked local lunch counters rather than festival stalls.
