Mayapan is almost never a destination in itself — it's a half-day excursion that pays for itself many times over if you base in Mérida rather than paying rural hacienda rates near the site. Costs are essentially the INAH archaeological ticket, round-trip ground transport from Mérida, water/snacks, and lunch at a local comedor in Telchaquillo or Tecoh. That is the entire budget envelope.
Season matters more than most travelers expect. The dry months (November–April) give reliable road access and full opening hours, which means you don't waste money on a taxi back to Mérida during a storm. Off-peak months (May–October) save you 20–40% on Mérida lodging but bring short afternoon downpours that can briefly close the zone — schedule the visit for late morning and you'll still come in under budget.
