Altorf itself has almost no commercial infrastructure, which is its budget advantage: overnight rates in surrounding gîtes and holiday rentals tend to undercut Strasbourg by a wide margin, and the village acts as a low-cost anchor on the Alsace Wine Route. Money leaks for budget travelers here usually come from two places — defaulting to Strasbourg for lodging and meals, and over-relying on a rental car when the TER regional rail line via Molsheim covers most day-to-day movement cheaply.
Shoulder season (late May/June and September/October) is the sweet spot: vineyard caves are open for tasting without the December Christmas-market price spike, hiking in the Vosges is free and accessible from the village, and train + bike combinations replace car rental. Plan around the Molsheim train station as your transit hub rather than trying to base in central Strasbourg.
